Simone joined our box over a year ago because she wanted something different.
During this time we have seen her transformation not just physical but also mental.
Simone is not just a regular gym person, she is an avid crossfitter, driven, tenacious and always humble.
Below his Simone`s journey in her own words
You have been a member at Metal Therapy for over a year now. Can you share a little about your training at Metal Therapy during this time?
Over the past year of being a member at Metal Therapy, my training has changed a lot. Initially I started of with 2 express Wod’s a week and a couple of classes.
I was really unsure of my capabilities in the beginning and also a little concerned with being injured, so I went easy on myself with the weights I chose.
But as I have learnt to understand how CrossFit works, I’ve slowly increased my weights and I’m even surprising myself with how heavy I can go on some of the moves.
Express Wod’s have taken a bit of a backseat to the full classes which I love.
With a gentle push by coach Gab, you have recently competed in your first individual CrossFit competition, could you tell us a little about this experience and also if you which tips would you give to anyone looking to sign up for their first CF comp?
My first individual comp was really nerve wracking. Looking at so many fit people and knowing one of the workouts included rope climbs, which I only successfully did the day before, it really tested my mental strength.
The easier thing to do, would have been not to do it but I had made a commitment to myself to see it through.
My goal was to not come last. Goal achieved!
My advice to something thinking about doing a CrossFit comp is to just do it! It’s about testing your own abilities and competing against yourself. It’s not really about winning, it’s more about give it your all to see what you are capable of. And don’t worry, no-one really cares how you go, they are all too busy thinking about themselves!
You have also signed up for your very first CrossFit Open... Everyone signs up for different reasons, can you tell us yours? Whats your motto for the 2019 CF Open?
Yes, my first Crossfit Open this year! My motivation to enter was mainly about getting out of my comfort zone. I knew going in there would be movements that are my weaknesses, but again for me it’s not about winning, it’s about continuous improvement and the Open is kind of like an assessment to put all the practice into action.
I’m inspired by so many fit people who do CrossFit and hugely encouraged by the members in our box as well.
My motto is “Give it what you’ve got and walk away happy”
Your improvements have been just amazing conquering the rope climb, stringing several pull ups together and much more. What's next on Simone's goal s list?
I’ve surprised myself by the things I have been able to do in the last 12 months. I’d like to master the rope climb, do at least 10 unbroken T2B and continue to work on getting getting better at pull ups.
What changes have you noticed in day to day life since starting CrossFit?
I’m definitely sorer!! The biggest change I have noticed is my overall strength and better muscle definition.
Now it`s time for the world to know a little more about Simone
... What were you like in high school?
In highschool I was very studious, a bit naughty and very opinionated.
I went to a Christian highschool and I was constantly challenging what they were teaching us about the bible and also lobbied to get condom vending machines in the senior school bathroom. Needless to say this didn’t go down very well.
....What’s your favorite ’90s jam??
My dream was to be a singer, so my favourite music in the 90’s was anything Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey.
.... What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?
Funny stuff is happening everyday. My husband and my kids always make me laugh. We have quite an asinine kind of humour
..... How would you convince someone to do the 2019 CF Open if they didn’t want to do it?
The 2019 Open so far has been fun, so if someone is thinking about it for 2020 and isn’t sure I would say a few things:
* Don’t let the itty bitty shitty committee in your head win. The one that tells you that you will fail, that you’re not as good as other people, that it will be too hard. Choose to be brave in the face of your fear.
* Think of it like a checkpoint. It will give you a better understanding of how far all of your hard work has gotten you and highlight some areas you get to work on.
* Have fun. You’re not competing to end world hunger, be the next Prime Minister or the next Strongest Person On Earth (well maybe you are) you are just competing against yourself.
* Use it as an opportunity to get out of comparison mode and into encouragement mode. It’s a good way to build your muscle around compassion and being happy for others who may have got a better results than you.
... How lucky are you and why?
I’m very lucky. Everyday that I wake up is another day I get to be the best version of myself. I have a comfortable home, food to eat, a beautiful family and people who love me. Can’t get much luckier than that. Plus, you make your own luck!
...Tell us your top 5 cheat meals?
My top 5 cheat meals are:
Ice cream – is that a meal? Damn straight it is!!
Laksa
Hot Chips

Thai Food
We've all got that one movement that makes us groan. What's yours?
There are so many movements that make me grown I can’t choose just one. Toes 2 Bar, Burpees especially when they are over a bar and anything involving a squat!
What's are your other favourites and what's to love about them?
My all time favourite move is deadlifts. I love them because I’ve really surprised myself with how heavy I can go.
Despite not loving squats, I do enjoy backsquats. The weight helps me get deeper into a squat and I like the challenge of getting back up without falling over. I also love double unders (when I’m not peeing myself!)
In the middle of a WOD, what animal would best represent you?
In the middle of a Wod the animal that best describes me is an Eagle because they never give up and they choose to change in order to survive.
